How to Choose a Saree for a Wedding or Family Celebration
Whether you are the bride, family or a guest: how to think about role, time of day, colour, fabric and comfort.

A wedding brings together tradition, family and personal style, and the saree you choose becomes part of the memory. A few simple questions make the choice easier.
Start with your role
The bride’s saree is usually decided with the family and often follows tradition. Close family members tend to dress in rich silks for the main ceremony. Guests have more freedom, but the kindest choice is one that celebrates the couple without competing with the bride.
Consider the time of day and the venue
Daytime ceremonies suit lighter colours and lighter weaves; evening receptions welcome deeper colours and more zari. An outdoor wedding in the heat calls for a fabric that breathes, while an air-conditioned hall can carry a heavier silk.
Think about colour
Gold, red, maroon, deep greens and jewel tones are traditional favourites at Indian weddings. Many families avoid black or all-white for the main ceremony, so if you are unsure, ask. In Kerala, an ivory-and-gold kasavu saree is a beautiful choice for a Hindu wedding.
Choose a fabric you can live in
Wedding days are long. Make sure you can sit, walk, eat and greet people comfortably. A silk that drapes well, or a lighter occasion saree, is often a better choice than the heaviest piece in the shop.
Plan the blouse early
Stitching takes time. Check whether the saree includes a blouse piece and allow enough time for fittings before the day.
Check the details before you buy
Confirm the fabric, the zari, the measurements and what is included, and read the returns policy in case the colour is not quite right in person.
