Kerala Kasavu Sarees: A Guide to the Classic Ivory-and-Gold Look

What makes a kasavu saree, where the tradition comes from, and what to check before you buy one.

Few textiles are as instantly recognisable as the Kerala kasavu saree: a body of ivory or off-white cotton, framed by a border of gold. It is quiet, it is luminous, and it has accompanied Kerala’s most meaningful moments for generations.

What “kasavu” means

Kasavu refers to the zari, the metallic thread, woven into the border. The cloth itself is traditionally a fine cotton left close to its natural colour, which is why the classic look is ivory and gold rather than white and gold.

From set mundu to saree

Before the six-yard saree became common in Kerala, women wore the mundum neriyathum, or set mundu: a lower garment and an upper cloth, both edged with kasavu. The kasavu saree carries the same character into a single drape, and many families still keep both.

Where it is woven

Kerala has several historic weaving centres, and some carry a Geographical Indication: Balaramapuram, near Thiruvananthapuram, and Kuthampully, in Thrissur district, are two of the best known. A kasavu saree may also be described as “Kerala-inspired” when it follows the look without coming from one of these centres. Both can be beautiful; what matters is that the listing tells you which one you are buying.

When to wear it

Kasavu is the saree of Onam and Vishu, temple visits and weddings. Today it also works far beyond them: with a contrast blouse in a deep colour for an evening, or with a simple cotton blouse for a day at work.

What to check before you buy

  • Material: is the body cotton, handloom cotton or a blend?
  • Zari: is the border woven with real zari, tested zari or imitation zari?
  • Origin: is a weaving centre named, and is it verified?
  • Measurements: length, width and whether a blouse piece is included.
  • Care: cotton and zari each need gentle handling.
