How to Store and Care for Your Sarees
Simple habits that keep cotton, silk and zari looking their best for years.

A well-kept saree can last for decades. The right care depends on the fibre, the weave, the dye and any embellishment, so always start with the instructions on your specific product. These general habits help almost every saree.
After wearing
Air the saree in the shade for a few hours before folding it away. Perspiration, perfume and food marks are easier to deal with straight away than after weeks in a cupboard.
Washing cotton
Wash cotton and Mul Cotton sarees separately in cold water for the first few washes, as some colours may bleed. Use a mild detergent, do not wring, and dry in the shade.
Cleaning silk
Dry cleaning is the safest choice for most silk sarees. If a spot appears, avoid rubbing it; take the saree to a cleaner and point it out.
Ironing
Iron cotton on a medium setting while it is slightly damp. Iron silk on a low setting with a cotton cloth in between, and never press a hot iron directly onto zari.
Storing
- Fold in a cotton or muslin cloth rather than plastic, which traps moisture.
- Wrap zari borders separately so the metallic thread does not rub or tarnish.
- Refold along new lines every few months so the creases do not set or split.
- Keep the cupboard dry and airy, away from direct sunlight.
- Do not spray perfume directly onto silk or zari.
